25.06.2014 - Status of Monte Carlo simulations in measurements ... Seminario

"Status of Monte Carlo simulations in measurements and searches done with the ATLAS detector"

Abstract:
Monte Carlo generators are essential components of almost all experimental analyses and are also widely used by theorists and experiments to make predictions and preparations for future experiments. In High Energy Physics they are crucial for both precise measurements of the parameters of the Standard Model and for searches of new physics processes.
I will present an overview of Monte Carlo generators based on the experience gained at the ATLAS experiment during the so-called "Run 1". I will introduce the Monte Carlo production system of the ATLAS experiment, highlighting the main challenges behind it and I will show the main strategies performed to understand and properly use Monte Carlo predictions in various physics analyses. I will also illustrate how Monte Carlo generators were tuned using real data. Particular attention will be dedicated to the preparation of Monte Carlo generators for the Run2 of the Large Hadron Collider.
