Il 14 Aprile 2021, alle ore 16:00, nell'ambito dei seminari del Dottorato di ricerca in Fisica e Nanoscienze, Sir Roger Penrose, University of Oxford terrà sulla piattaforma ZOOM un seminario dal titolo 

On the Interplay between General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics

Abstract

Despite much theorizing on how quantum theory might modify general relativity at extremely tiny scales, with hope to resolving the space-time singularity problem, there are strong reasons for believing that this cannot provide an overall answer, the big bang having a totally different structure from the expected singularities in black holes. Conformal geometry gives a very different picture, deeply related to the 2nd law of thermodynamics and leading to important thermodynamical insights and confirmed observations of previously unexpected effects—especially those referred to as “Hawking points”. The other side of this coin is how general-relativistic principles lead to expectations that the “collapse of the wave-function” is a gravitational effect, and to curiously distinct notions of classical and quantum reality.

whose creativity in physics and mathematics has been of great inspiration for generations of scientists.
Famous are his theorems formulated with Hawking, his tilings (Penrose tilings)

He has been awarded the 2020 Nobel prize in physics "for the discovery that black hole formation is a robust prediction of the general theory of relativity.”

He has shared 1/2 of the prize with the astronomers Andrea Ghez and Reinhard Genzel, who have been awarded fthe prezie for their discovery of the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way
