ABSTRACT
The label simply defined by two words, “Electron Microscopy”, hides a rather unexpected universe extending down to atomic scale within inert materials and living tissues, waiting to be explored and decoded with the help of a wide variety of structural and compositional investigation methods operating with electrons This lecture is intended to give a synthetic presentation of the basic aspects of electron microscopy in materials science, ranging from fundamental notions regarding the interaction between electrons and the solid state matter, to sample preparation and data acquisition through various typical techniques, their working principle and the specific information provided. The lecture will be illustrated with practical examples on the application of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in materials science based on results obtained with the TEM infrastructure installed at the National Institute of Materials Physics (NIMP) in Bucharest-Magurele.
