Large-N QCD
The solution of SU(N) QCD with N_f flavors of massless quarks -- whose elementary fields are massless to every order of perturbation theory and whose perturbation theory is weakly coupled in the ultraviolet (UV) but strongly coupled in the infrared because of the asymptotic freedom -- must unavoidably be nonperturbative. Indeed, the — yet to come — nonperturbative solution of large-N QCD would appear as a theory of an infinite number of glueballs and mesons -- the real asymptotic states in the S matrix to the leading large-N order -- weakly coupled at all energy scales as opposed to perturbation theory, with coupling of order 1/N for the glueballs and 1/sqrt N for the mesons and masses proportional to the renormalization-group invariant scale. We review our work on the nonperturbative renormalization properties of large-N QCD and, most recently, on the UV asymptotics of all the n-point correlators of twist-2 operators with maximal spin -- including a closed form for their generating functional -- that the nonperturbative solution has satisfy. The above properties and computations -- together with some new theoretical ideas -- may be a powerful guide in the search for the aforementioned nonperturbative solution.
