ABSTRACT
Regardless of their viability, the biogenic fraction of atmospheric aerosols, known as bioaerosol, consists of biological agents that can be toxic, provoke allergic reactions, or even be associated with a variety of environmental processes. Because of their size and light weight, bioaerosols can be transported over long distances through the wind, thus causing various acute and chronic diseases in humans, animals, and plants. Therefore, the rapid detection of infectious microorganisms suspended in the atmosphere is critical for preserving public health and security.
This seminar will deal with the characterization of the bioaerosol particles both in outdoor and indoor environments, particularly focusing on the investigation of airborne bacteria, fungi, pollen, and viruses. For this purpose, several monitoring campaigns were performed collecting aerosol samples by gravimetric methodologies and analysing them through metagenomics techniques. Moreover, the impact of long-range transported air masses on the sampled microbiome communities was evaluated at various taxonomic levels, as well as the relationships among bioaerosol components, meteorological parameters, and chemical species detected in the PM samples.
