Weak lensing shear measurements with Euclid

Abstract: There has been great excitement in experimental cosmology since the last discovery of the CMB B-mode polarisation by BICEP2. The impact of such a claimed result might be the first (though indirect) detection of the gravitational wave background generated by primordial inflation. Yet to come the final confirmation by Planck, CMB measurements are now mature techniques to rule out or strongly constrain current and future cosmological models with unprecedented accuracy. Weak lensing is a fascinating technique that - completely independent from and complementary to Planck and LSST - will pave the way toward experimental cosmology at sub-percent accuracy. In this talk I will introduce the scientific goals of Euclid - the weak-lensing telescope approved by ESA for launch in 2020 - and the tight requirements set for high-precision cosmology. Then I will go through the essence of the mission, the measurement of cosmic shear, and describe the main experimental difficulties related to such a demanding accuracy.
